AUTHENTIC MONGOLIA

Northern Taiga, Gobi Desert & Central Mongolia Journey

OVERVIEW

Beginning in Northern Mongolia at Lake Khovsgol, the journey explores pristine alpine landscapes, sacred waters, and deep-rooted nomadic traditions. The route then unfolds southward into the dramatic Gobi Desert, where lush ice-filled canyons, towering sand dunes, ancient fossil sites, and Buddhist ruins illustrate Mongolia’s striking natural diversity. Continuing through Central Mongolia, travelers explore Karakorum, the ancient capital of the Mongol Empire, and conclude the journey in Hustai National Park, home to the world’s only truly wild horse.

The region supports diverse wildlife and is home to traditional nomadic herding communities who maintain a deep, respectful relationship with the land.

Day 15 – Khongor Sand Dunes → Flaming Cliffs & Havtsgait Petroglyphs

This morning, drive to the rocky hills of Havtsgait Petroglyphs, one of the most important prehistoric rock art sites in the Gobi Desert. A short walk and gentle climb lead to a series of ancient petroglyphs carved into dark stone surfaces. These images depict animals, hunting scenes, and symbolic motifs created by early inhabitants of the region, offering valuable insight into human life in the Gobi thousands of years ago. From the hilltop, enjoy wide views across the surrounding desert plains, emphasizing the long relationship between people and this harsh landscape.

After exploring Havtsgait, continue to the legendary Flaming Cliffs (Bayanzag), one of the world’s most famous paleontological sites. This area gained international recognition in the 1920s with the discovery of dinosaur fossils, including the first scientifically documented dinosaur eggs. Walk through the striking red sandstone formations and learn about the region’s global significance in the history of paleontology.

In the late afternoon, remain at Flaming Cliffs to witness sunset, when the cliffs glow deep orange and red, giving the site its name. The changing light creates dramatic shadows and colors, making this one of the most memorable visual moments of the journey and an ideal setting for photography and quiet reflection.

                Why this area matters:

                • A bridge between natural history and human history

Day 16 – Flaming Cliffs → Ongi Monastery

After breakfast, begin the drive northward across the open landscapes of the Gobi, gradually leaving the deep desert region behind. Today’s journey marks a geographical and emotional transition, moving from the fossil-rich desert toward the historical heartland of Central Mongolia.

Arrive at the ruins of Ongi Monastery, once one of the largest and most important Buddhist monastic centers in southern Mongolia. Located along the Ongi River, the monastery complex originally consisted of two main monasteries and supported thousands of monks before its destruction during the political purges of the late 1930s.

Walk through the remaining temple foundations and surrounding ruins while learning about the role of Buddhism in Mongolian society, the impact of religious suppression during the socialist era, and the ongoing efforts to revive spiritual life in the region. The stark desert setting and quiet river valley create a powerful atmosphere for reflection on cultural loss, resilience, and renewal.

In the late afternoon, continue northward to your ger camp, enjoying the sense of transition as the landscape slowly changes from arid desert to open steppe.

                Why visit Ongi Monastery?

  • Insight into Mongolia’s Buddhist heritage
  • Reflection on cultural loss and revival
  • Peaceful desert setting for contemplation

                Accommodation: Ger camp

Strategically located along the Orkhon River Valley, Karakorum once served as the political, economic, and cultural center of the world’s largest land empire.

Begin your visit at Erdene Zuu Monastery, Mongolia’s oldest surviving Buddhist monastery. Built in the 16th century using stones from the ruins of ancient Karakorum, the monastery is enclosed by a wall of 108 white stupas. Walk through its temple complexes and courtyards while learning about the introduction of Buddhism to Mongolia, the monastery’s destruction during the socialist purges, and its revival as a spiritual and cultural symbol.

Continue to the Karakorum Museum, which provides valuable archaeological and historical context to the area. The museum displays artifacts uncovered from the ancient city, including ceramics, metalwork, religious objects, and evidence of international trade. Interactive exhibits and scale models help illustrate how Karakorum functioned as a cosmopolitan city connecting East and West along the Silk Road.

The day offers a deeper understanding of:

                Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 18 – Karakorum → Hustai National Park

After breakfast, depart Central Mongolia and travel toward Hustai National Park, located on the edge of the Mongolian steppe west of Ulaanbaatar. The journey offers a final overland experience through open grasslands, marking a transition from Mongolia’s historic heartland back to its modern capital.

Hustai National Park is internationally recognized for its successful reintroduction of the Przewalski’s horse (Takhi), the only truly wild horse species in the world. Once extinct in the wild, these horses were reintroduced from captive populations and now roam freely across the park’s steppe and forested hills. Guided exploration of the park provides insight into Mongolia’s wildlife conservation efforts and the delicate balance between nature protection and traditional pastoral life.

During your visit, observe Takhi herds in their natural habitat and learn about their behavior, social structure, and historical significance in Mongolian culture. Lunch today is at your own arrangement, allowing flexibility to choose according to individual preferences.

In the afternoon, at a pre-arranged time, regroup with your guide and continue with a short shopping tour. Visit the Gobi Cashmere factory store, where you can browse high-quality Mongolian cashmere products directly from the producer—an excellent opportunity to purchase authentic souvenirs and gifts.
